I have a Malawi tank with a pleco and a syndontis in it. I am curious as to what is the "job" for each of these. Is it that the pleco takes care of excess algea and the syndontis takes care of cleaning the substrate of excess food etc?

I would probably remove the pleco. Plecos and Malawi cichlids prefer VERY different kinds of water. Plecos are South American and prefer soft, acidic water. . . just the opposite of the hard, basic water that your Malawi cichlids like. Plus, the pleco will eat the algae that your Malawi cichlids really enjoy.
