I've been doing a little more research and I decided to do a planted tank for either a pair (or two) of rams OR an Agassiz's dwarf cichlid family/harem. However, since it will be based off S. America/Amazon region I have ran into a problem with the plants I wanted to use for the tank since I am trying to be fairly accurate on at least the correct continent. I wanted these plants originally:

Eleocharis parvula
Microsorum pteropus 'Windelov'
Limnobium laevigatum
Java fern (narrow)

However, only the Limnobium Laevigatum originats in S. America. I specifically wanted the Eleocharis Parvula in my tank because of the "carpet" effect it creates. What would be some good replacements for these plants that might be regional specific? I'm also trying to do a low light setup with hardy plants (also the reason why I chose these)

Thank You

I guess my selection of plants wont be a problem for a S. American setup? when would be the best time to add the plants? and one more question, would I need a flourite substrate or would fine gravel work if i had a liquid fertilizer to the tank regularly?

thank you

Depends on what type of South American biotope you're looking for but here is a link that covers them all.

Well, that was actually where I was doing my research and what made me decide to pick the amazon biotype. I guess more specifically I want to do either a S. American Blackwater creek/stream since thats the location of the main fish I want to keep. Since limnobium laevigatum is the only plant on my list that is native to S. America I wanted to find equivalents to the other plants that way I have at least plants from the same continent, if not from the same region.

K...after a quick look up apparently only two plants belong to the blackwater creek... Sword plants and Vallisneria. The sword plants require too much light for the setup I'll have, however the vallisneria looks like it would work for my background plant instead. If I wanted to have a carpet plant/grass for my tank would that still be a problem? I guess I could make the exception to a couple of the plants possibly.

Thank you
