How to clean Hairgrass b4 introducing to tank?

Gomisan

Man in a hat
I have just bought some Hairgrass from the LFS, and before I introduce it to my tank I'd like to clean it. I have read that Potassium Permangenate (spelling???) is the stuff to use, but i don't have any.

How should I prepare it before putting it in the tank? Would a salt bath help? or kill it?

I don't yet have another tank I could use as quarantine, which I know would be the ideal situation.

On a related note... should I leave it in it's little plastic tub, or should I 'plant it' in my gravel? Will it spread? or how can I help it propogate?

as for planting, i just got some hair grass as well. i pulled it out of the pot. it is made up of many, many tiny plants all clustered together on runners. using tweesers, i pulled appart each plant, removed the wool on the roots, and pressed it into the sand. took me an hour and a half and i soaked my jeans, but it looks great, albeit a bit sparce, but it will grow into a thick carpet or lawn.

Well all my fish are alive and well.. so I guess i managed to get the bleach rinsed out :) Here's the procedure I used, if anyone is interested or looking for the same answers I was.

I did a 3 part wash.

Stage 1:
Bucket 1 (non-aquarium use) 5L water, 250ml bleach (20:1 ratio)
Rinsed plant for about 90secs in bleach solution, swishing it about to remove any loose particles I could see.

Stage 2:
Bucket 2 (non-aquarium use), tap-water, with 4x dose of de-chlorinator water conditioner, rinsed plant thouroghly for a minute.

Stage 3:
Bucket 3 (aquarium use only), tap-water, with roughly 4 x dose of de-chlorinator, swished plant about and then let sit for a while, maybe 10 mins+. Tested water with Chlorine test kit to ensure no bleach remained at harmful levels. All OK, so transplanted plant to tank.

Now my Gourami thinks I've added a snack for him :( He seems to like nibbling on the Hairgrass. I guess I'll see who wins.. plant or fish.

I will now be keeping a close eye on my tank for trouble, it was such a fine/delicate plant that I didn't dare give it a stroner/longer bleach wash, so fingers crossed it was enough.

:bowing:
