When I drop a magnet on my black quartz substrate, the magnet always attracts a few grains. Sounds dangerous?

Quartz is not usually a magnetic substance. In fact, I would think it would have to be exposed to a REALLY STRONG electromagnetic field for a long time before it would become magnetic and I wouldn't think it would stay magnetic for very long. Seems really weird to me.

Most likely, your sand is contaminated with ferrous (iron) debris.

I discovered this when I entered an algea removing magnet. Actually, I'd estimate that 20% of the stuff is magnetic. I have no ill effects from it after three years. Those of you with quartz substrates, flourate... check it out and let me know.
