is it normal for a male guppy to try and mate with a female molly or platy? mine are constantly harassing my mollies trying to mate with them. I am already in the process of purchasing a 20 gallon for them to ease the tension, and i have a tank divider in the tank until then, but was just wondering if this was normal behavior?

Are there any female guppies for them to mate with? If they have the choice, I would expect them to pursue their own species. If there are no female guppies, I would guess any female livebearer would become progressively more attractive the longer the male guppies are deprived.

yea, i didn't get any females because I have nothing set up to care for any fry. If my fish breed, I would like to be able to care for at least some of the fry. right now, i only have the 55 gallon (20 gal coming soon for the guppies, as well as a 10 for a hospital/fry tank)

I had mollies nearly harrass a killifish to death trying to mate with it. Livebearers seem to try and hump anything that moves ;)
