Okay....I pronounce it Bow-sha. My friend says it's Bow-tee-ah.

Who's right, or are we both wrong?

Well Botia is a "latin" genus name. The rule of thumb I've used for these things is that spanish pronuciation of the vowels will get you close to the way it should be said.
a , e , i , o, u
ah, eh, ee,oh, oo

so, boh tee ah would be how I would say it.

Spend my teen years hanging around with a bunch of Italians and I'd pronounce that "BOW-tee-yah".

Ah, but the name isn't really Botia, according to fishbase.org, it's:

Chromobotia macracanthus

krow-mow-BOW-tee-yah mac-rah-can-thus

Now, is THAT correct?

Thanks all I humbly stand corrected!Actually, there IS a language where the letters "tia" are pronounced "sha", but I'll be danged if I can remember what it is. Regardless, that's probably where you are getting it from. A word like that.

If I could only remember . . . hrm.

Heh. Yah, there's that :)

I was thinking of a word used in the English language though that when pronounced properly the the "tia" is said as "sha".

Oh, I know where to look!

Going there now . . .

Martial (martial arts), spatial, martian -- but these words don't end in tia

AH! Scotia, as in Nova Scotia. Latin for New Scotland. Interesting. Meriam Webster says Scotia is pronounced as "SKOW-tee-ya" but Nova Scotia is "SKOW-sha" and so is the Scotia (SKOW-sha) sea.

Huh.
