What medications should people consider keeping on hand for emergencys? I usually have salt on hand but medications are another story. I have been very lucky in having healthy fish so I have never really needed any meds. I figure my luck could run out someday so I want to be prepared for any and all possible diseases.

There is always salt in the house. Beyond that I don't keep any meds on hand for the tanks.

Many meds have an expirey date. You may never get to use them. I guess it depends on how hard it would be to get meds if you needed them in a pinch. It could be costly to keep up with all the meds. Certain things like Melafix seem to have a long shelf life but salt probably will work in most situations that melafix does.

I used to keep Melafix on hand but I used it once in the longest time.... which was most recent and found salt IMO is really the best med if needed.... water changes usually keep things good otherwise...

I would recommend leaving the medicines in the LFS and buy them as needed. Normally, when I fish is acting strange, I isolate hin in a QT and watch him for a few hours/days, before I decide what to medicate.

Sometimes, the fish will recover by himself without the need of medicines, which is far better. Having the meds always at hand might turn you into a compulsive medicating hobbyist.

Thanks everyone. The LFS is about an hour away. With the hours I work there is no way that I would be able to go during the week. Everything would have to hold off till weekend. Sounds like most like the Melafix and Pimafix so I guess I will have to check those out.

I'm sure eventually all the meds would get used. I have had real good luck in the ponds but every now and then I come down with bad luck in the aquariums. With 2 ponds (50 gal and 1200 gal) and 2 fish tanks (20 gal and 125 gal) I stay pretty busy.
