Our swordtail just had a baby. It has been in the tank for about a week now and seems to be doing fine. If we raise it in this tank with its mother and it reproduces will the new babies have birth defects or is it fine to let a baby breed w/ its mother??

It will be fine to leave them in there. i have some guppies that i have had for about 2 years and they are doing fine. I started them just like you did.
The mother is probably more inbred than any of us could imagine.
The mother will eat the baby if it gets a chance. Mine usually only survived for about a week until i put them in a breeder trap when I found them. They are almost ready to be let out into the main tank.
