ok so i got a 20g i have thats in my closet and that i h avent used for a while i was looking at betta's the other day and i was abosolutely fasinated soo what i was THINKING was to get thouse seperating panels and get like three on them so that would be 4 bettas.
Soooooo the question is do betta tanks need good filters since there only little fish or do they need one at all i mean i could just give them weekly water changes

Filters are always great, and a certainly would recommend getting one if you can shell out the money for a cheap one, but if you're only going to have four bettas in a 20gal (long I'm assuming) you should be fine if you keep up with weekly water changes and gravel sucking.

you should use egg crate so water and dirty stuff can move through out the tank and into the filter. Plus its cheeper

egg crate? what purpose would it serve in the tank?

Egg crate for those that don't know is that plastic stuff that makes squares often put over flourecent light fixtures. It allows water to pass through while keeping fish that are bigger than the open areas from getting around them.

You don't need a filter with four bettas, but its never a bad thing. I would recommend an internal filter to reduce surface water movement, they like gentle water. You don't have to worry about oxygenating the water because betta's have to breath air at the surface.

If you do a filter weekly water changes should be enough.

I've heard that in divided tanks, it is a good idea to switch the filter's position from time to time, like from the right side of the tank to left or something. It was explained that this helped keep the water as evenly filtered as possible... I don't know if that's necessarily true, but there ya go.

If it were mine I would use 2 Red Sea Nano filters. And plants.

My betta tank is a 5g tank with a plexiglas divider in the middle, with numerous small holes drilled into it for water flow, that I aquarium sealed in place. I then have a ugf plate on each side for filtration. Actually, it's my only tank that still uses a ugf.

Oh, UGF would be a good choice for that. It will get water from all over the tank.

yeah not the eggcrate the your chicken eggs come in haha.

But if it was my tank, i wouldnt get a filter at all.

I would get a air pump and 3 sponge filter. Bettas dont make much of a mess.

all good input

the only thing i would like to add is that even tho bettas are laborinth fish they still do the majority of thier resperation through thier gills and are effected by water chemistry- they need just as much oxygen as the next fish as well as low nitrate, and other basic water parameters

and plants and such will be necissary so they don't have to be looking at e/o all the time.
