I've been somewhat puzzled about my new cichlids, and I've been doing some profile research.

I have two photos attached, that show their color fairly well. One photo includes what I think is one of the females, along with a colorful male.

When I got these (local source), I was told they were a hybrid electric blue (Sciaenochromis fryeri). I am now starting to wonder if they are actually a Labeotropheus fuelleborni. the color on the fins has me wondering.

What do you think? One, the other, or perhaps the hybrid is actually a cross between a fryeri and a fuelleborni?

I would say that they aren't labeotropheus fuelleborni due to the lack of an overhanging 'snout' that is characteristic of those fish.

No definately not a fulleborni, although they may have some in them.

They are for sure part S. fryeri, but what else they might be who knows. It will probebly be very difficult to tell.

When IDing a fish you have to go on much more than just coloration alone, you need to take into account suttle markings as well as body and fin shape. Fulleborni are very characteristic and usually one of the easiest malawis to ID because of thier 'nose'. That said, on one picture it sure looks like your fryeri has a bit of a nose.

Can you call the person you bought them from and ask what they were crossed with, if he knows?

Contacting the seller is not a problem. We actually remain in pretty good contact, and I will eventually be buying some additional cichlids from him.

I was trying to pay attention to more than just the color. It was particularly the placement of color along the fins, that I was looking at when I considered fullebourni. I would agree that the shape of the face looks more like a fryeri though.

I'll have to see if my supplier can help solve the mistery. I know they're hybrids. But, crossed with what is what I need to find out.

If/when I do, I'll post... maybe with some additional pictures as well.
