Hi there, just wondering if anyone can give me some advice on curing this? Its only on one of its eyes, so Im guessing its probably not an infection. Do fish recover from this pretty easily over time?

Im thinking on taking the fish back although Id rather not. I only got it on wednesday, and because the bag had a few others in there I didn't notice until the fish were in the tank. The lfs I got them from are generally dicks, and when I phoned to tell them about the pop-eye I was told to bring a sample of my water in. Which I said was fine, although it shouldnt matter because the eye obviously had problems before, to which I got the obvious response of "we'll be the judge of that". I am new to this so Im sure they'll out argue me pretty quickly.

So aye, if I can deal with this myself that would be great, but if not Im going to have some fun in the lfs tomorrow....... :argue:

Since it's only one eye thats effected you should quarante the fish and giving it clean water to help with healing.... add some salt, about 1 tablespoon per five gallons..

If both eyes begin to get infected then you should try an antibiotic.... something like MelaFix or PimaFix.

Excellent thanks! Ive read epsom salt is recommended, although I dont know where to get that. Is normal salt out of the question? Also, how long should this take to clear up?

thanks again for your time.

FYI MelaFix and Pima Fix are not antibiotics.

If the fish had pop-eye when you got it, then that LFS has very poor water conditions. Avoid it like the plague.

Keep the fish in QT and change the water out every day. A lot of the time it will clear up on its own if the original problem is corrected -- which is usually bad water. If you don't see it improve in three days or so, then try using some meds or Epsom salts. Epsom salts can be hard on fish, so use that only if it's stubborn.

You *can* add Mela or Pimafix, but as I noted earlier, they are not antibiotics. They are said to promote healing. I've used it, not noticed much difference in the healing process for various things, but it didnt hurt either.

Smells nice, too :)

Pop Eye is a symptom, not a disease. Various things can cause it including
eye injuries, internal parasites or a myriad of different infections either internal or external.

First line of defence is always "pristine clean water"... If that is in order, hit him with Maracyn 2. Should clean it up... If that doesnt work you will need a stronger anti biotic like Kanamycin. IF THAT DOESNT WORK, you could be looking at another issue, like parasites.

Cheers for the help folks! Went to get epsom salts today and by the time I got back he was sadly out the game completely (dead). Crap...... At least I'll know what to do next time.

thanks again

Say "Hey you gits, I just dropped 30 quid in your stinky shop, if you don't take this one obviously jacked up fish back, I will never shop at your store again. Furthermore I'll tell all my fish geek friends not to shop here either. So you take the fish back and give me store credit or I never shop here again you git wanker."

That should do the trick :coffee2:
