For the past few weeks, I've had a little time to kill, waiting to go to appointments. For my Amusement Only, and to kill a little time, I've been going into Walmart (Not much else open that time of morning) and asking some questions. Now, I already know the answers, but I like to see what they tell me. Here are a few examples:

I asked "Can you tell the sex of your mystery snails?"
Answer "They are both sexes, you only need one to reproduce"

"Can an ADF live with a Betta?"
Answer "No, the frog won't live very long"

I asked a little info about ich. I was told that "Salt won't kill ich. If it did why do you think saltwater fish can get ich. Ich takes 22 days to treat, but we use very strong meds that will treat it in a few days cause we don't have that kinda time. You never kill ich completly. Ich is like the common cold virus in humans, your always carrying 28 different germs, when you get run down they take over.

I was told odinium is the correct name for salwater ich.

Thats all I can think of for now. This man also told me disregard anything I may have read elsewhere (I argued a few points) because he has a degree in aquatic something or other. And thats why he's working at Walmart for $8 bucks an hour.

Weeelll, I don't think one could conduct much of anything scientific at Walmart. :dance2: It is an oxymoron.

But, we are from all parts or the continent. ( north america, or where ever Walmart locates itself). Let's pick one random question, for everyone who frequents Walmart, to ask the "fishroom staff" and see what kind of feedback we get. would be kind of a neat experiment....and then email them and ask some questions.

Pick a question????

Although I disagree with walmart selling fish, the local one has an older man who will compleatly admit he really doesn't know much about fish, but every time I walk in, he's reading a book on aquarium care. He's getting a lot better at what he does, and he's gotta be one of the nicest person on earth.

Needless to say, latly i've been impressed with the work he does, and I constantly over hear him telling customers the right things.

So, out of the million fish guys that work for walmart, I give this one my respect for admitting he didn't known anything about fish, and taking the steps to become comfortable with the fish care.

Would...

"How big will these assorted cichlids get in my 10 gallon tank?" work?

or

"Can I have one of these pleco and a bottle of algae killer, please?"

Ya know, this could actually be interesting. We'd have to factor in anomalies like shaunakadub's old fella, but for the most part they swap employees around different departments so much that it's rare to find someone knowledgeable. We now have 4 Walmarts in the smaller Burlington/Hillsborough region (NC) and I wouldn't mind at all going to each one's fishy section--shoot, I'd even go to the one in Siler City, to garner info on an informal pseudo-scientific experiment. I say go for it--experimentation nation!!
