I have an adult JD and would like to give him some treats. Just wondering what you all feed yours. I have fed feeders and worms along w/ the daily pellets. Thanks
My dempsey gets:
Hikari Cichlid Gold
Hikari Cichlid Staple
Hikari Sinking Wafers
Hikari Sinking Carnivore Pellets
Freeze Dried Krill
Frozen Krill
Frozen Beefheart
Frozen Brine Shrimp
Frozen Bloodworms
Earthworms
Mealworms

Mine likes silversides, meal worms, garden worms and cichlid gold.
Silversides? How big is yours? I drop one in and my dempsey runs for cover. Can't figure out why.

All my JD's love the frozen krill I feed them. I buy the big krill and they go crazy. Especially my big male.
They also get Ocean Nutrition Cichlid Omni Flake
Hikari pellets
Frozen bloodworms
frozen squid
frozen clams
frozen plankton
frozen mysis
and frozen beef heart
I also have some frozen crab claw meat that we eat. I usually break off a piece and throw that in. My big male tears it apart. That is his big treat. He only gets it once verey few weeks.
I have found JD's not very picky about food. If you keep it as a treat and only feed it once in a while. They will go wild for it.
But keep in mind that a varied diet will keep it healthy and colorful.

All cichlids need a varied diet to remain active and colorful. I think what you are feed them will be fine.
Just to add one thing...I'm not sure how often you use feeders...but if I were you i'd use them very sparingly.

This is my big male.
When I want to breed JD's I just drop 2 or 3 of my females into his tank and let him choose, then remove the rest.
I've had minimum 15 good broods from him in the last 18 months. He's a stud.
I just can't keep a female in there all the time because he has a tendency of tearing them apart. He'a one mean sob.
Right now I am keeping him with my 9 inch female synspilum. She keeps him in line.

On the site... aquariacentral... that one pic of a JD they have was bluetiful.. it was all bright neon blue... is that a particular JD type, a particular time in their life, is it the light fixture or what? If I had a JD, I'd only want it if it were that colour... that's bluetiful.... If I were to ever get a JD, how would I get one to be like that?
I'm 99% sure you're talking about Mojo's pic...pic #5 credited to Mo Devlin.
That pic isn't a true representation of how you'd see the fish. They are tinted very blue. I forget the exact reason why. There is a "blue dempsey" in the market that is bluer than the common jack dempsey.

Heh, you are 100% correct about which fish I was refering to. What do you mean tinted? The glass is tinted? The lights are tinted? The fish is tinted??? I can't believe once again, I envy MoJo's fish, and I didn't even know it was his fish this time... =[
First his Albino Veil Oscar, now his "Blue" Dempseys...
Dagnabbit, I'll show you up one day mister! :::shakes fist:::
Mine gets.....
Krill
Brine shrimp
Beefheart
Some flake
Hikari gold
Shrimp pellets
Hikari food sticks
mealworms, waxworms, and superworms
convict fry...
My JD eats only freeze dries tubex worms and earthworms, he's a picky guy but won't eat anything else.
