I live in NYC, am PetCo dependant, and want to wean myself off of PetCo towards a LFS. Problem is... I don't know of any LFS's in the city (and don't have a car to make treks outside the city). Anyone have a name?

Excellent! FYI - There were 2 New World Aquarium's, one was closed, but one is still open. Also, the Fishtown USA is in the Bronx. Thanks for the info, seems like the NWA's should be pretty good, checking it out this wkend.

There used to be a pretty good place down on Chambers st. right off Church st. down town. Its been a long time since I've been there but you might want to check it out.

Chambers Street, Jmann?!?!

Assuming (yes, I know) we're talking about the same place, you're showing your age... that joint has been closed for nearly 25 years! My dad took me there when I was about 10 yars old. The place went straight through the block - from Chambers through to Warren Street. Great shop! That was the place that got me hooked on fish.

A Mom & Pop shop opened on Chambers about 3-4 yers ago. They didn't stay around too long, maybe a year or two at most.

Nattybrack -

New World has moved from 8th Street up to E 38th Street between 3rd & 2nd Avenues.

NEW WORLD AQUARIUM
204 E 38TH ST, NEW YORK, NY 10016
(646) 865-9604

I don't know your preferences but they have a good selection of fish. Ask for Oliver when you get there. Be advised, they are pretty expensive.

If you can find a ride out to Queens you MUST check out Aquatic Treasures. It's my favorite LFS.

AQUATIC TREASURES AQUARIUM
6206 WOODHAVEN BLVD, REGO PARK, NY 11374
(718) 397-0373

The proprietor is Yung. Good guy, knowledgeable. Not as fish smart as Oliver at New World but their selection blows New World away and their prices are a little better also.

Good luck

FishTown is on Northern Blvd and Francis Lewis Blvd in Queens. It's a pain to get there without a car, but the prices are excellent and worthwhile the bus trip.
There is also Northern Aquarium at Northern Blvd at the entrance ramp for the van Wyck Expwy.
Another store is on Main Street about 5 blocks from Roosevelt Ave.
Cameo Pet shop on Jamaica Ave at 117th Street.
Hillside Pets round the corner on Hillside Ave.
Pacific Aquarium on Delancey in Manhattan.
Aqua Star on Mulberry and The WIN on Mott Street in Chinatown.
That's about all I know.

Hey Transcriptus, I'm nowhere near that old. I'm only thirty. If I remember right it was about 10 or 12 years ago. I'm almost sure it was on Chambers. It had a dinky upstairs store and it had a basement with some really nice tank setups. But it sure wasn't 25 years ago.

Finally got a chance to go to NEW WORLD AQUARIUM on 38th St. and spoke with Oliver. His service, knowledge and the store itself were really very impressive. Anyone in the area should def. check it out.
Many thanks to the board members for their suggestion.
