Just got a 55g and currently have a blood parrot cichlid (hybrid) not because I'm okay w/"creating" fish, but he was alone at lfs for 3 weeks and looked lonley. I have others in w/him, but will take out what I have to, to "plan" what I want to go in there w/ him. What types of unusual fish or colorful fish can go in w/him?

The parrot can be put with lots.
I have had TWO and threw both out to the LFS they are nice and different
looking. To cut the crap put them with red divels. oscers. jack dempcy.
or fronttosa.all african cicleds.

You shouldn't put Parrots with Africans as they require completeley different water chemistry. Parrots are a hybrid of american cichlids so should be housed either with other american cichlids or with other larger fish such as tinfoil barbs, silver dollars etc..
In my experience Parrots are more boisterous than aggressive so i would suggest good cichlid tankmates as Oscar's, Severum's, Convicts. I would try to avoid putting them with anything as aggressive as Red Devils, Green terrors or any of the large aggressive cichlids.

But also keep in mind the size of the tank, a 55 will be too small for an oscar full grown. :)

jsut make sure you stay with the central and south american cichliuds, dont go with africans as MATTARCAS said, they have differnet wanter paramenters, but go with convicts, Jack depmseys, acaras, terrors, or any other fish that can hold their own ground, that sort of thing, others will work too those are just sum common ones
