I have a 40 gallon freshwater setup, heavily planted and few fish (cories, tetras, glass cats). I have been thinking about adding a pair of Blue Rams to this tank as I have heard they are a gentle or less aggressive cichlid. This last weekend I came across a Sparkling Gourami for the first time and was equally smitten. I have heard that you should not put Gouramis and Cichlids together but I was wondering if these two fish will be ok together?

I've also read that it is difficult to sex the Sparkling Gouramis and that having more females than males would reduce the aggression. I'm an advocate of having several of the same species in the same tank and I don't know if my local fish store be able to sex these Gouramis. Any suggestions? Thanks!
