I would like to put a spotted cory into a tank that has very small gravel.
The gravel is not the smooth round pebbles commonly seen in tanks. It is smaller and instead of being smooth it is rough edged.
Will the corys do ok in there, or do they need smooth gravel? I dont want him to be uncomfortable or get injured.

Depends on how rough really. They do like to 'rut around' for their food. We have medium, coarse gravel and a little bit of sand on top of that. The sand isn't thick. More so to help keep leftover food from falling through the cracks.

Maybe add a little sand to the mix to help. Just my thoughts.....

Just my experience - my gravel is Eco-Complete, which is not rounded (some bits are rather rough), and my 4 albino cories have had no problems with their barbels. They've been in there for over 1 yr.

I have 3 albino cories in a tank with regular garden pebbles. Not too sharp, not round. Their barbles look fine.

Just remeber that a lonely cory is an unhappy cory. A group of 4+ would be advisable.

It has been my experience that damaged barbells do not occur from rough/sharp substrate, but rather from poor water conditions. In the past I have had tanks with flourite and it did not bother my corys at all. Just my $.02.

I second that...I have flourite as well.

Very true! Corys are much more happy/active with at least 3 in the tank.

That would make sense.

I agree, and I also saw a thread about this a while back and OG chimed in with the same info. as above, and she is very fish savy :p:
