Hi,

Does anyone have any experience with small, open-top aquariums (say around 3 gallons)? I'm especially looking for info. regarding:

1. Ways to light the tank & plants--can you light it with a desk lamp? What type of bulbs/ wattage is required for an open-top planted tank with a desk lamp? How close/far should the bulb be from the plants?

2. What types of (smallish) plants would grow best in this type of environment--are there any plants that can grow emergent from the tank?

Thanks a bunch

Lighting: A desk lamp should be okay depending on what plants you want to grow and the watts. I would say that a 13 watt one is sufficient. You can get the coralife fixture thats comes for small nano tanks and use the mounting legs it has.

Plants: Moss, egeria najas, baby tears, ludwigia(this will grow outside of tank).

Cheers,
Pedro

Thanks for the info Pedro.

Does anyone know which type of (small) fish would work in an open top aquarium? I've heard that guppies are "jumpers"...
