I just got a used 45 gallon tank (free on freecycle.org) and wanted to know if it’s ready for the fish I want to put in it. The fish will be coming out of existing tanks that I already have. I got the tank a little over a week ago and set it up with a spare filter from another tank and put in some plants and snails. Levels as of last night are;
Ammonia: a little over 0, the color is just off the 0 reading
Nitrite: same as ammonia, almost 0
Nitrate: 50ppm
PH: 6.8 (or 7.0, depends on the light I’m checking it against)
Haven’t tested for hardness yet.

I plan on doing a 30% water change before adding the fish tonight.
The tank has a 100watt and a 200watt heater. It has a HOB power filter rated for up to 50 gallons and a second bubble filter (out of an existing tank) rated for up to 10 gallons. I built a custom hood that has two large florescent bulbs.

The fish I plan on moving to this tank are;
3 Mollys
2 Yo-Yo loaches
2 Bala sharks
1 Black shark (George)
2 Angles
I know the mollys might not be the best for the tank, but they have been the dominant fish in the 29 gallon tank so far. I want to get most of the other fish out of the 29 because of the baby angles I now have. I’m mostly worried about the black shark and the yo-yo loaches. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would check the readings after the water change..the nitrates look high
are you using test strips?
I find those aren'tas accurate as i like

can you transfer part of the fish load over?

I wonder about the nitrogen cycle getting hit too hard .

if you transfer the fish I would recommend you watch the water parameters daily for awhile.

Ok just for clarification the filter is coming off of an established tank?

If so then sure id say stock it up; but if the filter is new be sure to cycle the tank up first…

The small filter came off an established tank that has been running for months. I have a tendency to double up on almost everything due to other issues I've had before with equipment failures.

I can move some of the fish tonight and then more later. I was thinking about putting the Yo-Yo's in first to let them feel at home before the big fish show up.

Have you added any ammonia to the tank at all? if the bacteria haven't had any ammonia and nitrite for a week they could have all died. Snails don't produce enough waste to keep a filter going. I would add some ammonia, about to .25 ppm and see if it goes to zero and that nitrites don't build up.
