I currently have a 55 gallon I am redoing. Presently it contains 1 pleco (7-8 inches), one convict, and 3 blue gourami. I plan on removing the gouramis and placing them into a 10g. If I have to remove the convict, he could also go into the 10g since they all get along.

I would like to make the 55g a semi-aggressive tank. What I would like is suggestions as to what fish I could use and how many. I really like the cichlids since they seem to be the most colorful of FW. But I don't know much about them.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

are the blue gourami's aka 3 spot gourami's??

if they are they can get around 4" someties 5" and ay be a bit large for a 10 gallon also I believe convicts can get to 5"

if you are going to move the fish you may want to consider a larger tank.

if you want profiles of semi agressive cichlids..you should look at some of the cichlid sites..
you will prob need to consider which region or biotope you want.

there are CA(central american) SA(south american) african.

the needs vary with the region they come from ie many african usually require harder water with higher ph.

also to consider are the size that many will attain..much too large for a 55.

I like the SA and have a tank with angels(mid-top water) rams(bolivian) and some dither fish.

mine is planted with caves.

If you are keeping the pleco in the 55, then you should stick to Central and South American cichlids rather than the Africans because the water conditions needed for the pleco and African cichlids are different.

Although the gouramis and convict get along in the 55, they probably won't have such a good time together in a 10 gallon tank.

Since you are re-doing everything, you may want to look into finding a new home for the fish intended for to 10 gallon tank.

The blue gourami (AKA 3 spotted gourami) are fully matured and are aprox 3 inches. Thats why I don't think they should have a problem in the 10 gallon.

Since the convict is a SA cichlid, would I be able to keep in the 55 w/ lets say kribs? I know there must be other dwarf SA cichlids that are colorful and not very aggressive. I am trying to find more info.

I could see putting 2 3" gouramis in a 10, but not any more than that since it'll get crowded fast. 3 might be ok, but might be pushing the limits if you know what I mean. just my 0.02 though ;)

don't know about the kribs, but a convict should be fine in a 55.

anyone know off the top of their head how big a green terror gets (they are nice and colorful)? it might go in a 55, but they can be territorial and might get a bit surly with anything else in the tank. someone please correct me if I'm wwrong on that one ;) just want to be helpful.

If they are three spot gouramis and only 3" long, they still have some growing to do. They can get about double that size. A 10 gallon will be too small for them. If you want to remove them from the 55 I would give them to someone else who can properly house them. Same for the convict, a 10 is just too small IMO.
