Going to give a few discus a shot

a local breeder has spare stock and is willing to part with some discus.

he breed blood red with cobalt(calls them cobalt red...LOL)

I'll be picking up 3 tomorrow to see how well I like them. $45 for all three.

they'll be going in a SA tank with 3 angels(young) some danios and rams(bolivian). the discus are fairly young 3" I'll be doing water changes 10-20% every day for a bit :rolleyes:

IMO the discus are better off on their own, without the angels.

Sometimes it takes awhile to get them in their comfort zone. Once they are there, they will eat readily and compete with each other for food just like any other cichlid. However, this being said, I wouldn't introduce them to a tank with other large established cichlids.

Good tank mates include:
small tetras
cories
rams
shy, peaceful fisheseses

As long as the discus are healthy and not skittish, the discus will do just fine mixed with angels...matter of fact, they will push the angels away from the food!! If they are skittish and very shy, then something is wrong. Discus should NEVER be hiding. They should always be out and about looking for food and whatnot. Most of the time the tank conditions are not right. Most people dont do enough water changes to keep them healthy...just enough to keep them alive. When you get your discus, if they are shy and whatnot after a week or two of being in your tank, try increasing your water changes even more and try reducing any hiding spots in the tank. They should do fine. Just keep the temp up and the water changes frequent and they will do great.

You really should also consider quarantining the discus for 6-8 weeks before adding them in with the other fish. There's nothing worse than adding fish with a virus, parasite, etc in with your others and having everything be wiped out. Quarantining should be done with any new fish. You might be fine 99% of the time just throwing them right in with the other fish, but that 1% can be a very costly mistake.

Decent looking fish too, I'm sure Ryan would agree.

the discus will eventually make their way to a 75 with other juvenile angels (3)
the breeder has tried angels with discus and he has not had any issues with the mix.

the discus (4) are at home and are being drip acclimated to a quarantine tank.

he gave me the volume discount 4 for $50 ;)
he also showed me his breeder tanks..
he has a large assortment of discus I saw the parents of the fry..beautiful fish.

all the fry are healthy and full of vigor..we covered the wc change and feeding schedule.

the 75 is currently at 84 degrees and gets water changes frequently.

I found that I can take treated water (dechlorinated) and siphon that into the sump well at the same time I am using a gravel vac and cleaning the main tank.
almost like a drip system.


I'll let you know how the experiment goes.

btw..i plan on getting a third large tank in the next few months a minimum 75 also..maybe larger...LOL
