I recently received a free tank/hood from someone i know, so I was trying to think of what to do with it. I already have a 20g planted and a small 10 gallon. Finally i figured out that i wanted to do: a cichlid tank!

There are tons of rocks behind my house, so I cleaned and boiled some that i liked...

U may notice there's no heater, but that hasn't come in yet.. haha don't think i'm putting these guys in cold water.

I'm using an AC 70 (300gph) power filter, and i was told that it should be more than sufficient water flow for inside the tank and i wouldn't need a powerhead. Would anyone say anything different?

Also, I'd like to know what to do about a background. I was thinking black, but would look that okay on such a light substrate?

Any other suggestions??? I have not decided on which type of cichlids to put in the tank. Considering I am new to them, suggestions on this would be helpful too.

Looks pretty good!

I would do either a pair of dwarf SA/CA cichlids (such as blue rams) or small african riverine cichlids (such as kribensis) or possibly even some smaller lake tangynikan cichlids such as shelldwellers. Unfortuneately your tank is too small for lake malawi cichlids, or else I would reccomend those ;).

i really like the way you have that rock setup and yes your filter is fine they are rated for tanks 40-70 gallons
