I've had my tank and fish for about 3 months now and in the past 3-4 weeks I've noticed that the filter keeps getting clogged up with a slimmy redish/brown substance and the water is staying cloudy despite 30% water changes. I'm suspecting that the slimmy redish/brown substance is just waterlogged food and that the cloudiness is due to water not being adequately filtered. But I really don't feel like I'm overfeeding. I've got 10 fish and feed them approximately 2 tsp of food per day (one in the morning, one at night).

Anybody have any advice?

2 tsp a day? That sounds like a ton of food to me usually you just give them a pinch. Watch your fish when you feed them, if there is any uneaten food falling to the bottom your overfeeding.

you say you had 10 fish if so thats overstocked

depends on what fish you have.. can you tell us?
Oh gosh...I honestly have no idea. I'm no pro fish owner here...certainly the amature "I went to PetSmart and bought some fish" I'm afraid. I'm usually not one to be so ill-knowledged about something, but that seems to be the case here.

I'm guessing if you have 10 fish from Petsmart in a 10 gallon tank, there's balas and a pleco for your standard. 2 fish which should not be in a 10 gallon but are often suggested as such from Petsmart. I'm guessing the sludge stuff you're finding is not due to an inadequuate filter but from an inadequate stock. All the food you're feeding (which is a lot for a 10 gallon) to be eaten so quickly from the fish is returning to the tank as waste material (fecal matter) and being sucked up by the filter. My advice, find out what fish you have so we can make a better prognosis of your situation. Also, do you have a test kit for your tank and have you tested? My guess is that your ammonia is going to be off the charts, amonst other things. If you do have a kit, please don't say they're strips...
