I have had a pair of convicts in a twenty-three gallon tank for about a month and have now noticed some little blackish things in a clay pot that I think may be eggs. This is my first time with any cichlid, so if this question is dreadfully obvious, please excuse me, as there is no cichlid newbie section.
The past weeks the convicts have been digging out a huge hole in the substrate right in front of and under the clay pot, which I think may be breeding behavior. I am unsure of this however, as the female is only about an inch long and seems too small to breed. The male is about twice the size of the female, and they have spent much time together. The female also seems to be guarding the pot's entrance. The only other inhabitants are a sole SAE, so if they are eggs, they must be from the cons.
My next question is, of course, what to do with the young little cichlids. I just happen to have a ten gallon empty right now, so could I move them to that. I am not planning on keeping them long term there, but raising them and hopefully giving or selling them to a LFS. What should I feed the fry? I don't have any live or frozen food, and probably won't be able to get any either.(I am only 15 and my mother is not too keen on having live little worms or shrimp around, or frozen in the freezer. Heck, she won't even let me plant my fishtanks, but that's another story!) Are there any commonly available flaked, pelleted, or freeze dried foods that would work.
Once again, I'm completely new to cichlids so any help would be appreciated. I'm sorry for the long post, especially with the bandwith(sp?) issues that AC has had.
