Okay first things first. I have a 30gal tank that has been set up since Halloween '05 that is planted with a few rummynose tetras, a few white clouds, and a few otos. Right now I have an AC50 and want to put an RENA XP2 on there. Now I want a few discus for the tank. My question is would the XP2 be too much flow for a 30g with discus? I know that for 30 the XP2 would be more than enough filtration, but i dont want the flow to stress the discus.

well how many discus are you goin to put in the tank?

I assume the rena is a canister? I imagine that you could either point the output at the tank glass, or fashion some kind of diffuser/spraybar.

I am planning on only having 3 discus....one per 10 gal of water. And the RENA XP2 is a canister. I believe that they come with a spraybar. You dont think that a canister rated for something like an 80g tank would be too much?

I don't think so. If you can't knock the current down with diffusers, then you could snip off two oposite impeller blades. Cut the flow in half. You would need a new impeller if you ever wanted the filter back to 100% though.

I have two XP2s on my 55. I would use one on a 30, it should be fine. I keep the spray bars about 1/2" below the surface and parallel, and there are no topwater fish so it doesn't bother anyone. If you're worried about it, just point the spraybar at the back wall and it should dissipate the current plenty. It will just splash like crazy when you do water changes.

as long as the spray bar is below thew water line you should be fine
