I recently installed power compact lighting in my tank (2x 10,000 K and 2x super actinic Blue) all 55 watts for a total of 220 watts. After a few days running, noticed lime green algae all over the tank. The guy at my LFS also just recently upgraded his tank to stronger lighting and is also experiencing the same problem. In my tank the algae comes right back after cleaning it; 2 hours after! Does anybody know how to control this stuff! :
Here are my tank specs.
Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 5ppm
Ph: 8.2
Phosphate: 0ppm
Temp. 75 to 78
I do 10% water changes every week

What lighting did you have before? How long are you running the new lights? I would "introduce" the new lights if they are brighter than the previous ones. Start by only running them an hour or so and continue to build up. Sometimes that is also the sign of old bulbs but I would think being new the bulbs are good.

I would be curious about this also. I have experienced the same problem and went to my local store. They said it was fine and normal and in fact I have a healthy tank. I wonder though,.....cause I don't think I should have to clean this sucker that often. Takes away from the joy.

I have the same thing happening. I understand that it's just a kind of algae that grows well under the lights. It's not bad and it doesn't grow out of control and it doesn't grow in shady spots. I have actually had some coralline algae grow right over it and kill it, so it must not be too persistent. Coralline hate algae.

Good news! The algae is now coming out less frequently. I tried limiting the amount of light each day. I only leave them on for 6 to 8 hours each day, however, some of my corals don’t seem to like this. I also noticed that in areas that I did not clean-off the algae, coralline algae grew and seemed to have consumed the lime green stuff. Anyway, thanks for the helpful advice.
