Is it true that figure 8 puffers are compatible with malawi cichlids? I was considering getting a couple to throw in my tank, but is that going to be a problem?

I think you're heading for problems. Particularly depending on the type of puffer and the type of cichlids... Not all puffers are the same, nor are all cichlids... even if they're all from the same lake.

The puffers need brackish water as young fish, and potentially full on salt water by adulthood. The cichlids could handle some salt, but not the type of tank you'd need for the puffers.

I think most will tell you that puffers belong in a species tank. So the only thing in the tank should be the puffers.

There are many other choices out there that are a lot more compatible.

good job jmattingly, but to clarify a few things, there are FW puffers, brackish puffers and SW puffers. Some do go from fw->bw->sw and some dont. The fig 8 is Indeed a brackish fish and will not do well in a FW tank. Being an ambush preditor, and territorial by nature, any fish that gets too close will either be badly wounded or killed.(even fish larger than the puffer itself) Even If you find a FW puffer you like, you will likely run into the same problems. Here is some good info on puffers if you like them, but as J said, best if in a species only tank....http://www.pufferlist.com/
