i bought a 5" pl*co from petsmart the other day for only 4.49
when i was checking him out that night i saw he was skin and bones. he doesnt suck on the glass he just sits there
i throw algae wafers in his area but he does nothing. any chance of survival?
my tank is new with no algae growth yet, i do have a massive sized driftwood though, will he munch on that?
the tank is 220 gallons

it's possible he has parasites. You should put driftwood in your tank, maybe try sinking a cucumber slice and leaving the lights out since they usually are more active in the dark..

Also, next time don't waste your money on 1/2 dead fish.

often new plecos will not suck on the glass or axcept algae wafers right away, as they may have never had them before. keep putting small pieces of algae wafers in the tank and hope that he finds them some day.

i have driftwood, about a 24"x14" piece
i didnt realize he was in bad shape at petco because he was in the tank way up on top and i bought some other fish too. i just wanted to get the heck outta there because it took the petco sales person an hour to catch 5 tiger barbs and 4 tinfoil barbs, i was on the verge of passing out :D

Try some zucchini blanched in garlic water. Lots of garlic. Garlic is said to stimulate their appetite and he may not be able to resist investigating. If he tries a bite, you win.

thnx :)
how long can the zuccini stay in the water? is 24 hours ok?

I've left Cucumber slices in for 48 hours and they were totally consumed. I slice them rather thin though, like 2 cm thick.

i guess we're talking about a common pleco here? they will rest and hide in the driftwood but they don't use it as a large part of their diet, if at all. how does your pleco's belly look? if it is flat, then you have a chance of it surviving. zucchini with garlic is the best thing to try - blanching means to boil it for 30-60 seconds.
if your plec's tummy is caved in, best of luck but don't hold your breath. if plecos go too long without food, whether during a long stressful shipment or refusing manufactured foods at the store, the bacteria in their digestive tracts will die. once it is gone it doesn't come back. your fish can eat but none of the nutrients are being processed or absorbed and it can be full of food but slowly starving. if it looks that way, best to bring it back to the store and get one that shows signs of being a good eater.

its pretty flat with maybe a slight cave in but not too bad
i dont think petco feeds any of their fish. they all look terribly thin. usually i can fatten them up but pl*co's are a whole other ball game.
oh yes he is a common pl*co....and yes im superstitious, im not placing that E in pl*co lol
getting him out, i wish i could, but with all the rocks and plants and the fact that the tank is 30" deep its pretty much impossible of removing anything that is moving
heres a pic of the tank, he hides in the rocks but if he comes out later ill get a pic of him. once i get the tinfoil barbs to a size of 3" ill add my central american cichlids that are in a 55 grow out tank since november.
the tinfoils now are invisible in that tank lol...there only an inch long..dummy move on my part :o

Oh, that is a pretty if miminalist tank. Those plants don't look real though in the pic, except for that swordplant in the left back corner.
