I read in a book that "Neon tetras thrive more readily than cardinals in conditioned tap water even if it is hard and alkaline. this is because they are farm-bred, whereas most cardinals are still wild caught from habitats where the water is soft and acidic, and they will not easily adapt to different parameters."
