Out of curiosity I was looking at the Regent version of the marineland eclipse 5 hex tank. It has an incandescent fixture with no splash plate. The only thing to keep things safe is a plastic sleeve on the light socket. While this, I guess, is OK for incandescent bulbs how well would this work for a compact fluorescent? Anyone have any experience with these tanks? Also, the tank is kind of deep 15". would a 10w compact fluorescent have enough penetration to grow low light plants such as Anubius or Java Fern?

I have the 5g. I use a 20watt compact fluorescent from Walmart. It works fine. I use it as a Betta tank, so no splash problems.

Cool. Does the > 15watt bulb warning not apply to screw in CFs, just incandescent bulbs? Just wondering now that you mentioned you had a 20w bulb.

I use a 40 watt CF here in my Regent 5 gallon hex. The CF bulb I bought is the kind made to look like a long pointed teardrop...a ceiling fan bulb. I've had no problems.

No, the warning is about the heat of the lamp. The 40 watt CF I'm using only draws the same current as a 7 watt incandescent bulb, so surely doesn't put out much more heat than a 15 watt. I've had no trouble in about a year.

Put a 15 watt CF in there, I have 4 shrimp colonies setup with them. 3 wpg is fine and you will not worry about burning your house down.....DC
