I decided I might get a 29 gallon tank and I just wanted to ask what everyone thinks of my stocking idea. I would do weekly 50% water changes.

pair of apistos (not sure what kind)
7 cardinal or neon tetras
7 rummynose tetras
6 panda cories
6 otos

Would this work? Should I leave out one of the tetra species?

Way to many fish, but that's ok because you will not be able to keep cories with your apistos (apistos HATE cories). Other than that everything sounds fine. If you want to see free swimming fry for more than a day or so (from your apistos) then you will need to go with pencil fish or hatchet fish as your tetras. Both of the types of tetras you have listed are extremely predatory and will desimate a dwarf cichlid spawn in a matter of hours (especially with that many of them). If your not interested in breeding, then it will work fine. It sounds like a beautiful tank.

sounds like a nice tank, but like moonman says the cories and apistos wont get along. I personally would go with only one school of Tetras...i think a nice school would look better than two small school. And another thing....do you like otos or are you just getting them for algae? If you are getting them bc you like the thats fine, but with water changes of about 50% weekly you should have very little problems w/ algae

Are apistos only agressive during breeding? Ive noticed my apisto occasionally chasing away my cories but they usually stick to their own parts of the tank and the apistos feed from the top with the tetras. If I decide I want to breed them, I will find a tank to put them in.

The tetra schools are the main thing I'm hesitant about because right now it seems as if the two schools would complement eachother well, but I might regret it later on. Does anyone else have suggestions for the tetras?

The otos, I want them because I think they look great hanging from the decorations in groups. If they do help me control algae, then thats even better. I'll probably get some of the algae in my 20 started in the 29 to feed the otos, and the tank will be heavily planted.

They are much more territorial during breeding, but I have found most males to be somewhat territorial pretty much constantly. The problem is that there are lots of cacatuoides males out there that WILL tolerate cories in a 29g. There are just as many that will make it thier lifes work to pick out thier eyes and make thier life meserable. There's simply no telling which one you will get.

If you want to try it, I would suggest A. borelli or switch to Keyhole cichlids. Borelli are small and less capable of doing major damage, and keyholes are quite posibly the mildest cichlid on earth.

PS Borelli will also spawn readily in most tap water (much like cacatuoides).
