Rummynoses murdered by Congos??

I thought Congo tetras were supposed to be timid, shy fish...

I put 3 rummynoses in there with them, went away for about an hour, and came back to find one rummy completely disappeared with no skeleton or anything, one rummy suffering at the surface, upside down and missing his tail fin, and one hidden deep within the java moss and unwilling to come out for any reason.

What the heck is going on here? Is there any way to save the last one? The only other possibly compatible tank I have is a 55 gallon with 2 giant danios and 3 balas, the balas have eaten all the snails so I'm thinking they might kill the last living rummy. Any ideas?
 
I have very agressive congos as well. They even killed off my school of serpae tetras. Glowlights, and neons are a no no in the tank too. The only thing that works with them so far has been larger gouramis.
 
This is really weird, everything I have read says they are a shy, timid fish.

Well here's an update, the one that was floating upside down missing his tail fin died last night. Still no sign of the missing one. The third one must be really tough or fast, because he's swimming around in the open now and they seem to be leaving him alone.

Has anyone else seen this behavior in congos?
 
It all depends upon the individual fishes temperaments.
I had some really evil diamond tetras a few years ago that would kill and harrass other fish. Traded them in at a different store for 6 new ones that were peaceful.
Some fish just forget to act like they are supposed to.
 
Most places will take trades. Talk to the owner or the manager and see what kind of a deal you can work out.
 
Yeah, not at all what I would expect. Granted the congos were about 3 inches and the serpaes were only about an inch but they were supposed to be the aggressive ones not the congos.
I always manage to end up with some psycho fish that don't act the way they are supposed to.

I had a JD for years that was an oddball. It lived in a 55 gallon with a school of 2 dozen zebra danios and was actually scared of the danios. This was a 6 inch fish afraid of 1 inch fish. He used to hide from them. Go figure.
 
I have some congos..they can be mean when they need to be..and have you looked at their mouths..they have some of the biggest teeth I've ever seen on freshwater fish..sides pirhanas of course.
 
Ive kept congo's for years two schools of a dosen each or more no probs with any fish death baby neons with my 4"congo's.

Granted they are agressive but never seen them attack another fish.My money is on the G danios besides the rummy nose would never have been happy in there to much action.
