I just set up my freashwater aquarium about 2 months ago. I am currently using a power filter but a lot of people are telling me to go to an under gravel system. I just am not sure if this is nessesary. and if I do decide to do this how should I go about it. I really dont want to start all over and waste the good water in my tank or stress the fish. I have a 55 gallon with 2 rainbow, 5 barbs, 2 blue dwarf Gurami, and 3 flame Gurami.

If your current filter is working fine and the biological capacity is enough, you should not change it.

Tell us what filter you are using, thoug.

undergravel is definitely not my choice. In my experience, they just collect crap and don't allow you to do good vacuum's. Using a reverse UGF is supposed to work better but never messed with one. HOB power filters are my choice for stocked tanks, sponges for breeding tanks. Kyle

I'm back. Had to go but I returned.

If you decide to change your current filter for an UGF (undergravel filter), you'll have to take the fish into buckets, drain all the water, take all the gravel and decors out and keep it in another bucket with old water, put the filter, cover ir with the gravel, set things up again, fill the tank, and acclimatize your fish again as if they were coming from the fish store.

I wouldn't do it. Power filters work fine, and are much easier to clean then UGF.

By the way, do you have info on auqarium cycling? If not, read the stickies in the top of the forum.
