I need to buy one of the above, primarily to run as a Diatom filter.

If this was all, from what I researched here and other forums, I've read System 1 is the way to go.
The question is, since the Magnum and H.O.T. can do double duty (Diatom temporarily and\or other filtering the rest of the time) am I not getting a better value with one of these over the System 1?

I realize the Magnum and H.O.T. will probably not be as great as the System 1 for the Diatom usage. But since the Diatom usage seems to be at most once a week for a couple hours, I would think the trade off would be worth it.

Can those of you with experience using the Magnum and or H.O.T. for Diatom filtering, please postup your experiences.

Thanks in advance.

I have a Magnum 350 running on my 55 gal. It is okay, but I am not happy with the outflow (too concentrated and strong for a planted tank IMO), so I am going to replace it with an Eheim. I have been running it with a diatom filter for the past month or so trying to deal with a green water problem. It has been okay. I did not use any diatomaceous earth, and I imagine it would have gone better with it. I have not tried the other two, so I can not compare.

I've narrowed it down to the Magnum 350...can anyone give me a reason why I should go with the system 1 for almost double the price?

i have a magnum 350 right now and i love it...just had to clean out the canister last night was very quick and easy....Ordered for the Bio-Wheel attachment but it still hasn't arrived...

I am running a HOT on my 55g. Great filter, though I rarely if ever use the micron cartridge. My water stays pretty clear without it...haven't really needed to use it very much at all but it does do a good job at polishing the water when called to do so. The HOT is pretty much just a supplemental filter for any tank 55g and over.

I have several Mag 350. With and without bio wheels. Love them all, polish as needed with micron. Quick and easy change out or cleaning.
