I have setup a small 10 gallon tank to cure LR and now I want to cultivate coralline algae before putting them in my tank.
From almost every things I have read in this forum, the recommendation is to use Kalkwasser. The problem is neither Petco nor Petsmart carry it. I found small LFS (superfishstore) that sell Kalkwasser. But they also sell few other products from SeaChem. Two of them that I am interested are, Reef Complete and Reef Calcium. Both these products advertise as providing more Ca than Kalkwasser. Are they then better than Kalkwasser.

I recently started using Purple Up - http://www.caribseasubstrate.com/index.html?lmd=38812.421019 - it is by far one of the best supplements I've ever used. It works, and it works fast! I no longer use Reef complete and Reef calcium. Purple Up does a much better job. If you can't find it in stores, a lot of internet sites sell it.

things to remember, Corraline is an algae, it needs light and nutrients (mainly calcium). Using a good Salt from the beginning will keep your levels where they need to be. I was using Instant Ocean and was having a hard time keeping my calcium up past 370 or so. From what i've read, Instant Ocean is low in magnesium, so no matter what and how much you dose, your not going to keep your calcium up without a higher mag level. I'm in the process of switching to Reef Crystals, which is supposed to have better mag and such.

Sorry to ramble, what i'm trying to say, is if you start out right, you shouldn't need to dose. I've also read on www.reefcentral.com under chemistry (water) that purpleup is snake oil, don't know, i'm trying it myself right now.

oh also purple up is mainly calcium and iodine, from what i've read and it's not good to be adding things you can't test for. So just be careful dumping a bunch of purple up in there.

Hey Pufferpoison...I've been using Reef Crystals for a few years and I am happy with it (I use to use Instant Ocean too). And I understand your skepticism about Purple Up - I don't usually believe huge claims by products either. I have a 25g reef tank that has been running for 4 years with good coraline growth. I had been using the Seachem Reef Complete and Reef Calcium as part of my supplement regimen, but thought I'd give Purple Up a try (And I like seachem products alot). Within less than two weeks of switching, the coraline took off. Basically, it's a combination of calcium, strontium, magnesium, carbonate and iodine (By the way, there are test kits for all these elements). In other words, it is similar to the Seachem supplements I was already using. But for some reason, perhaps how it is delivered, the coraline just took off. Its a pretty new product, but, in doing my research, I found a lot of folks on forums who had actually used it saying they had similar results, while you had the negative comments primarily being made by people who had not even heard of it or had not tried it or were going on hearsay. So that's my experience. Again, I usually do not put a hell of a lot of faith in supplement claims, and I don't usually sing a product's praises. But I must say this stuff does what it says. By the way, I am only using it 3 times a week, although it says you can dose daily.

If we are throwin in our 2 cents - I used it and got nothing, started dosing seachem kalk and slowly but surely the coraline came.

I am puzzled. Kalkwasser is a Kent product and not Seachem product. I am to assume that you didn’t get any coralline algae when you use SeaChem product but got coralline algae when using Kalkwasser.

um kalkwasser isn't just a kent product. Kalkwasser is German meaning "limewater". Kalkwasser is Calcium Hydroxide and that's all. it's not a name like "purple up" or something.

Guys,to promote coraline algae, all u need is :

a) a stable KH,Calcium(This 1 is very important), Mg level.
b) Iron & mangenese
c) Coraline love blue light.

No matter what brand u use, all u need is above requirements. To know more about it, please visit www.garf.org. Inside got 1 subfolder, the thread inside are telling how to promote coraline algae growth.
