Hiya all. No :troll: allowed in this thread (or I will flame you like you have never been flamed before, and that is my solemn vow).

Where are all the trolls coming from? Oi Maloy, Pran, Oscar4Luncher...

Then we have the troll enablers, or semi trolls, such as Gumby131, Fishieperson321, PufferPoison (who has since reformed from his aiding and abetting :) and that is MUCH appreciated PP).

I've noticed a trend here. We seem to be getting alot of new people looking at the site who give poor advice, post garbage, waste time, and are affecting the quality of the Aquaria Central I've come to know and love.

AC needed another sponsor apparently, and MFK stepped in, and now advertises here. Of course, being curious, I visited MFK and was STUNNED at the misinformation and juvenile stuff going on in some of the posts. YES, we have our share of idiots too, but I am saying that stuff is rampant over there.

Has there been an influx of trolls from MFK (or is the timing coincidence)?

Are jealous members of other aquaria forums trying to bring AC down?

Or are all of the trolls just one really persistent bunch of immature retarded @$$#oles who have nothing better to do with their time than bother us? I would imagine that kind of planned harassment to be criminal...

What's going on?

Every time I log on and see that kind of stuff I get PO'ed. Here I wanted to post a thread on possible reasons, what we as members can do to protect our little corner of the net, and what ideas other people have.

We don't need to vent, or target particular instances or posters, I am more interested in the why, how, and what can we do to stop it. Our mods are vigilant and they do a great job. We know about reporting posts and PM'ing in instances where there's a glut of new posts, but other than flaming the trolls (which really justs eggs them on) I'm wondering why they're all here at once. My Spidey sense is tingling...

Moderators have been quite succesful lately taking care of trolls.

However, the best way we can help people from taking/giving bad advice is to unmask them as fast as posible. If you see a new member with a low post count telling someone "it's fine to keep 20 goldfish in a 30gl tank" you can inmediately make another post where you (POLITELY, POLITELY) tell why that's wrong. If the bahavior continues from the same person, it's advisable to tell a mod.

This is something we all can do. Trollers will always be around, so it's everyones job to keep them under control.

Hey Graphic,
This board has been really good. I belong to other lists that are really populated by trolls. I have assumed that the reason mfk became our "sponsor" is that aquariacentral.org points to their site and the obvious mix up involved in that. I think that the core group here (you being one of them) recognizes and gets rid of the trolls pretty quickly, too. What I've learned from my other lists, you recognize these people for what they are, let other's know not to feed into it, and eventually they go away and reappear someday as someone else. You can't really stop it but you can keep it at a bearable level.
Take care,
Mary.

And, I still cringe at "members" with zero post counts on GCC.

nice post, but who knows where they could be coming from? probably the same way we all found this site, through internet searches and such, these people seem to enjoy spaming the site as they figure that we must just be a bunch of fish geeks that can't handle someone crashing the party...

Aren't we supposed to be fish geeks? Time to re-think my core composition.

i also go to a site called carstereo.com and there have been way worse spammers, instead of stupid comments and crap, there was a group of about 10 people that came in and posted as much porn as they could, plus they had about 2 hour to do this before the mods found out, by the end of everything there were about 100 porno post in each section....im just glad that hasent happend here.....anyways i just thought i would tell you guys that we have it pretty good on AC

I think a lot of the juvenile stuff that goes on over there has to do with the contests they always run. Don't get me wrong that is a nice thing they do, but to enter most of these contest/raffles you need to have a post count of 200 or more. If you really wanted in on a particular contest and only had 50 posts thats a lot of spamming to get your count up. You also need 5 posts before you can look at the pictures posted in threads. Another reason for some spamming.

No matter what message board you go to there will always be spam and trolls. At least it's taken care of quickly here.

Hopefully its just a temporary thing. I can deal with some of the troll's some times, but spam would really drive me nuts if it started happening a lot. Does MFK have links to AC? I never checked them out since I don't have any monster fish.

Unfortunately there is always trolls around. Some get bored and wander off, some resign up under other names after being banned. Some might even be legit members with a trollish alias. Some get bored..wander off and come back. The moderators do their best to off them as soon as they crop up, but they need ppl to report trolls. And some trolls know just how to skate under the line of being banned, just where they **** people off, but the mod can't justify banning them. Just consistently report them. They eventually give reason for banning.

You people are EXTREMELY nice!! As I told Rosita earlier today... if y'all are HALF has nice to your fish, as you are to the :troll: then your fish have GOT to be pretty thrilled!!

I'm more of a "get in their face and humiliate them" sort of person... so in order not to tick anyone off, I've just been biting my tongue. But you guys are seriously nice and polite to people who need a waffle stomper up the keester!!!

Thumbs up for being such a nice crew.

Well, some of the posters here on AC are nice...

I don't think I'll ever win the Polly Primrose Award For Public Politeness...
:argue:

I think the reason forum trolling occurs so much is lack of negative consequences. It's not like some sicko who gets their jollies antagonizing people here is ever going to face any real repercussion for their mentally unstable or anti-social behavior. Maybe we can devise a way to rochambeau someone over the internet.
:thud:

It makes me wish I had the technical knowledge to drop a virus with a nasty boot sector burning payload on the hard drive of the moron with nothing better to do than annoy people who enjoy this site.

Illegal I know, but the idea of it gives me the warm fuzzies. :dance2:

On the bright side, maybe the troll's release of their negative emotions online satisfies their psychologically sadistic tendencies and actually prevents them acting out on a more destructive level. After all, people who get off on other people's unhappiness and frustration tend to be nasty, self-loathing losers. The kind of people who kick their own dog because they can...
:dog: :troll:

The solution as I see it is keeping registration quick and easy for people who are here for the right reasons, while developing a decent method for filtering out spammers and trolls. Not easy...
