Well i have seen moon-lights in my LFS and i was wondering if they are actualy worth the cash?

i have a 35 gallon Cichlid tank with some convicts and a pleco in it?
could this help them at all in any way?
or is just keeping them in the pure darkness better for them?

just another marketing 'gimick' to take your hard earned money. moonlights are crap. your fish certainly don't need 'em.

I'm thinking about building some moon lights for my tank, but its for me, not the fish. Its just a way to look at them at night without having to have full tank lights on. The point of them is not to affect the fish in any way when they're on.

if the fish are swimming, they're being affected. fish 'sleep' when it's dark and if you interrupt their photoperiod/diurnal cycle, it's the same as you not getting any sleep.

Thats what i was thinkin, becuase i know when fish are in lakes or streams or the ocean or whatever they can get our of the light by going into caves and such hiding places that are not as available while in an aquarium.

Well i guess i have decided against buying them, and if i really want them i will make them.

IMO they don't really add much, I just got them to see some nocturnal fish. You have to be pretty close to the tank to actually see anything when the moon lights are on. Not worth it in my opinion.

moonlights look cool on my reef tanks but do nothing for cichlid tanks except spook the pants off of them
cichlids can spook by the shadows givin off by moonlights, id skip it

Well thanks all for the feedback, i have decied not to get them.
Also is it normal for Cichlids to spoke so easy?
mine run and hide when i walk by the tank, and i have to stand their without moving for a while to get them to go back to what they were doing so i can star at them :).

These fish are also knew-ish to me, im the second keeper of them, maybe 3rd.

Wow, some people are paranoid about moonlights for some reason. My cichlids also dash away into the rocks when I approach, but they're back out begging for food in seconds. I say get them if you like the look. You're not going to kill your fish with LEDs. I've caught my betta napping with the light on. It doesn't need to be pitch black for the fish to get sleep.
