If I am trying to set up a planted tank, would it be best to leave out checmical filtration (IE, remove the Charcoal from the filter pads on my power filter), so it doesnt absorbe trace nutrients?

yea..the plants will do most of the bio-filtration..and so all you really need in planted tank is some mechanical.
