hey,
i have built a hood out of plywood and i wasw thinking of buying 4 of these globes--- http://www.neco.com.au/product.asp?pID=89&cID=46 in the daylight color temperature (6400K) to help plant growth.
just wondering if anyone has done anything similer or if these would work at all. here is another pic of one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_fluorescent_lamp

Yes, those will work. A lot of people (myself included) use them as an easy way to convert old incandescent hoods into fluorescent for plants. However, if you're building something from scratch, I would think long tube (T8 or T5) fluorescents would be better.

I replaced all the incandecent bulbs with them on all my small tanks 10 Gal and under. They work great.
