Hi , I think its about time for me to set up my first aquarium now . Although its my first , I do know some stuff as Ive read up on it and helped my friend to set up a couple of tanks. Okay so now some detail and questions :

I will have some live plants but not too many , just along the back and to one side. So I guess I dont really need CO2 cos its only a 10g tank.
What kind of substrate ? Sand or fine gravel?
About how much lighting would I need cos the tank is 15 inches deep?
Im planning on stocking it with 2 pairs of Fancy Guppies and 2 pairs of Glowlight Tetras OR 3 pairs of Guppies and a pair/ single male Betta
Will there be any compatability issues between the two ?
No undergravel filter obviously so I may get a sponge or power filter . It should be away from the plants right?

A couple of spoons of salt or none?
Cycling : For how long and what should be in my tank at the time?

Thats about it for now.

hey there,

I will try and answer some questions.
for a planted tank, i have got millions of suggestions for fluorite or eco-complete. i myself am also trying to do a planted 10g and i went with black eco-complete.

Lighting would depend on what type pf plants you are going with.mostly the light that the tank came with is insuffiecient with growing any plants.the light has to be fluorscent NOT incandescent.i got a 15W fluorscent strip with my 10 gal but have upgraded with a kit from ahsupply.com. i got their 2*13w bright kit but you can go for more light such as 1*36W.

salt? dont add any salt unless you are treating fish.

for filters, a good all around choice imo is Aquaclear-its a hang on the back style. i have an AC 30 on mine which is a little bit excessive for my size ank but i prefer that.

and for cycling, pls look at this thread: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64301

Good luck!

I'm not entirely certain what you meant by that exactly, but I'll say this just in case: DO NOT PUT A PAIR OF MALE BETTAS IN THAT TANK TOGETHER. They're called Siamese Fighting fish for a reason-- two male bettas WILL fight if put in the same tank, especially one that small, and they WILL kill each other. Caution would also be advised if you planned on keeping a male and female together, as well, since they too may very well just end up beating the snot out of each other.

Heh. That's all I can think of to contribute, really. :D

I've never actually done it myself, but i have been told by my LFS and read on here several times that Male betta's often mistake male fancy guppies as other male betta's and kill them...
