Hi y'all,
I took some wonderful pictures of my bristlenose this weekend. I think the one may be a male and the other a female. I have had them since they were about a quarter of an inch long, now 8 months later am absolutely in awe of their growing process. It seems like they change on a daily basis. Just sharing the pictures but if anyone can speculate whether it's a boy and girl I'd appreciated it.
Take care,
Mary.

The smaller one from underneath, no bristles, yet, anyhow.

How long are they now? At what size did you start noticing the bristles coming out on the one? (I have one, 1-1/2 inches now, still no bristles.)

Great pictures! I like the second one, with his little head and bristles poking up behind the zucchini.

Kveeti,
Thanks! I'd say I started noticing tiny bumps on the one's face about the end of January or beginning of February. The one w/o whiskers is still under an inch and a half. The one with whiskers is about 2 inches, but he is growing like crazy, he was probably a little over an inch when they started to come in.
Take care,
Mary.

Cute pleco. What size is your tank?

JungleMason:
Thanks!

Abilor:
They are in a 55 gallon.

Kveeti:
They have not given me their names yet. They have been collectively known as the "Prehistoric Fish," because that is what they reminded me of, but not since they've grown. One day they'll let me know their names... :)
Take care,
Mary.

:OT: mudros: is that horseface loach on your avatar actually in one of your tanks? I have one in my 55g and he is a funny little guy.

some males won't get their bristles until 2.5-3 inches. Some, however, will get them earlier (around 2"). But, if your fish started out the same size and one is significantly bigger and has bristles, it's a fair bet that you have a pair. I say that because males tend to be much larger than females of the same age.

When your fish get to 2.5" and 3" (f/m) give them a cave to spawn in. I have breeding females that are only 2.5 inches and they drop about 30 eggs. My 3.5" female has dropped up to 75. Just make sure you have plenty of room for raising babies!

Yep! That would be Nauti, or Naughty if you prefer... ;) He reminds me of a nautilus. He's in the 55 gallon. And he's getting BIG, too. He was a mere babe when I got him. Looked like a thin little spotted worm, with little itty bitty fins. Don't get me started, I'll bring out the "family" album any second!
Take care,
Mary.
