I have a lovely new betta in his own little 10 gallon tank... right now I have a java fern and a crypt in there, and I might put some more low light plants in there, so lighting for plants isn't too big of a concern since they will be low light.

I can get either 15 or 30 watts of fluorescent light over his tank, and I know there are all kinds of bulbs and temperatures. I would like one that specifically shows off his individual color...

is fins are a transluscent warm black with steel blue sheen... will any particular lighting bring out the blue sheen more? Any suggestions?

I got a Marineland fluorescent light bulb from Petsmart for my new betta (don't remember the model number but can find it if you want). And the colors are amazingly beautiful and crisp. My betta tank is pretty small (2.5 gal) so I got a 11 W lamp but you probably can find higher wattage.
The tank used to have an incadescent light bulb, but the colors didn't show very well and the bulb got pretty hot if you left it on for a while.

is it the striplight with the pins, for a fixture, or just a screw-in bulb?

Right now I have a reptile ESU something fluorescent striplight over the tank, but I think i'll pick up a new fixture from walmart because for some reason even with new bulbs the older fixture (about a year or two old) is looking dull.

Right now I have a flora-glo bulb, I think it's called, over it.

It's a screw-in fluorescent bulb. Something similar to this but a diffrent brand. Just Make sure it says "day light" or some thing similar on the packaging of the lamp because that's the most natural light you want.
