Sand Pit for my loaches?

I have a 3 black kuhli loaches in my 33g with a gravel substrate (with a UGF and a HOB). I don't want to change the substrate, but I want to give my kuhlis some sand to play in. I am thinking of a sand pit.

Any suggestions on size and construction?
 
Well, it's harder with the ugf. I created a sandbar at the end of my tank and placed the sand in between the end of the filter grate and the side of the aquarium. The aquarium is a flatback hex and has a standard shaped plate, so there was quite a bit of room. My loaches loved it while it was there, but I have since removed it when my plates broke and I had to replace them. I'm still syphoning sand out of the tank with water changes which is a pain...
