I have an older 29g tank with a mature 4" angel and some blue gouramis. I've recently upgraded the lighting with a 55w PC retrofit from AHSupply. Now that I have so much light in the tank, I've noticed hundreds of scratches on the inside of the tank. I've thought about getting a 37g tank as it has the same footprint, but more depth. I'm also starting to plant this tank, FWIW. Is there any real benefit to the 37 aside from extra water? What's a fair price for a new 29g or 37g?

That's all well and good, but what do I stand to gain from it? It'd be like going from a 75 to a 90.

I'd like to take out all but the angel and a single blue gourami and add a blood parrot. Would I be better off with the 37?

The 37 gives you an extra 8 gallons. I can't think of anything negative about going for extra water volume.

Same footprint...more volume...more stability? Better for the greater height of an angel as it grows? A few more dithers for activity? Lots of possibilities!

i think blood parrots need something like a 50 or a 75 gallon...

More water is better, but deeper tanks need stronger lighting to reach small plants at the bottom. One of the chain stores near me sells 29's for $45US. Probably spend 50-60 at a local store.

I was in the same predicatment as you, beatle- curious-my LFS wanted 94$ for a 37, what was the ball park on yours and where did you get it?

Good choice. The best bet is to always go for the largest you can manage. I have a tiny place so I only have a 20 gal.

My LFS wanted $62.99 for the 37 which isn't bad. I got a used one with an Eclipse 3 hood for $50, however. Now I need to figure out if it's worth retrofitting new lights into the Eclipse (I'm a sucker for clean looking stuff) or if I should just sell the Eclipse hood with my 29 and stick with the existing AHSupply retrofit I installed into that hood.
