i want to start a planted tank and i just wanted to know if sand is ok to use. theres a guy at a lfs and he said its bad, and i should use small stones. just wanted to know what you guys think. thanks

Sand is fine. You should augment it with laterite in the the bottom 1/3 and might want to consider MTS to prevent compaction.
