I am looking to buy 2 iron stands, one for a 20 gallon tank and possibly one for a 40 gallon tank. My only concern is that they will not be strong enough to hold the tanks. What are people experiences? Has anyone had problems with this? Does anyone know of a company that makes sturdy stands that they would recommend? Thanks!

on a first /secondfloor, DIY a wood stand, my reef is on a iron stand on the first floor and it shakes every time someone walks by it. the wood stand will have more weight closer to the floor and less shaking. however to make anything that has to hold wieght, make sure the weight is suported by the material and not whatever is holding the material together, if youhave someone build it for you, this should be the first thing you check.

usually an iron stand made for an aquarium stand is fine. Obviously look for cracks or weakness but 99.9% of the time they are fine. only 1 concern. it is easier to chip glass on iron but thats obvious. E-bay sometimes has some for sale??

I had a wrought iron stand for 55 gallon aquarium for years. Once the water is filled, the weight of the water would make sure that it won't move (espcially not when you walk by it).

I actually just moved a 20 gallon tank on to a scroll iron stand yesterday. It seemed kind of shaky before the filled tank was on it, but it's working out great. I don't notice any shaking when walking by and it seems just as sturdy as a wooden stand. Most metal stands have the added benefit that a second tank of equal or smaller size can be placed on the bottom rack. I have a 10 gallon cycling under it right now.

As for finding the metal stands - ask at your local fish or reptile store. I had a reptile store I frequent order mine to save on the cost of shipping. None of my local stores actually keep these stands in stock, so it was pretty hard to track down.
