ive just replaced the gravel for sand in my planted aquarium, is this a good move or am i making complications for myself
 
good for some plants worse for others. Also you may have killed a lot of bacteria that lived in your gravel and thereby caused a mini cycle.
 
What kind of sand? If it's a clay-based sand specifically made for plants (eco-complete, onyx sand) then you should be fine. If it's Estes Marine Sand, then the grain size might be too small. Post on the plant forum for advice from the resident plant geeks. ;)
