For the last few months, I have been heading up the ECAS Fish Rescue Program - the first case being very sucessful in which we rescued approx 75 fish from an uncertain future. Our newest case involves two Red Bellied Pacu who have out-grown the 55gl tank they are currently being housed in. These fish are now about 1' in length but will reach up to 3' in time. They are appox. 3-4 years old now.

The owner has asked us to find a new home for them. They are her beloved pets but she recognizes that she can no longer care for them properly and is unable to upgade to something more suitable. However, I have not been very successful to date in finding more suitable accomodations for them and no one in the ECAS Membership has a tank large enough to keep them long term.

If possible, could you distribute this message to anyone you know that may be interested in these fish. One of these fish alone would need something in the way of a 300gl tank while for the pair; 500gl minimum.

Just to clarify, the RB Pacu are located in New Brunswick and would need to be transported from location to their new home. The owner is willing to give them to an interested party for free. The owner has also given us to the end of May to find new homes for these fish, after which point, if not rehomed, they will most certainly be destoyed. It would be a shame if they were.

I am also providing the link to the case so that you can see what progress, or lack thereof, we have had to date: http://www.eastcoastaquariumsociety.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?id=6293

If you have any questions or need clarification/elaboration, please do not hestitate to contact me.

Just a small update:

I've found a interested party located in Ontario to take both fish. This is certainly a step in the right direction for sure, as the deadline for finding them a permanant home draws closer

This case has certainly given many a much clear perspective on being an informed consumer before purchasing larger fish. It is just too bad that often retailers give in to consumer demand before considering the long terms needs of the fish in question. Hopefully something can be learned from this on both sides

Cheers
