I am setting up a 10gal tank for cichlids and was told by the lfs that I should have a powerhead to create a current. I know that this is a small tank(it's a starter) is a penguin 1140 too much? Here's a little info on my set-up:
10 gal with tons of lava rock and small gravel substrate
1- whisper filter(small came with the tank)
1- Biowheel 125
1-small clay pot
1- small Lacy catfish

An 1140 seems like way to much current in a 10 gallon. I had a 550(?) on my 10 gallon and I thought that was too much. There was just not enough space for the fish to hide if they didn't like the current.

Personally I wouldn't even bother with a powerhead if you're using a HOB filter that should create enough current, though if you really want one, a little Hagen/Aquaclear Powerhead 10 or 20 would be fine.
