I read somewhere that if I raise my tank temperature to about 85-86 degrees F, it will kill off all the ich in the tank. Is this true? And if so, for how long do I have to keep it at the temp. to be successful?

To the best of my knowledge, no. It speeds the lifecycle up, so you can cure it quicker (you can't kill the parasite during the parasitic phase).

You still need to use some kind of medication. I'm sure there is a temperature above which ick dies, but I don't know what it is.

Faramir - the required temp is about 90F (32C), but not many fsh will be able to get sufficient oxygen, especially with gill involvement with the parasite, to withstand that temp long enough to do the job.

BTW, that is from The Manual of Fish Health" by Chris Andrews et al, from tetra Press.

Ta. I had a feeling it was too high to use heat alone as a treatment.
